  •  KIWANIS VILLAGE LODGE – Woodworking Group Assistant, Knitting Group, Chess Companion

     KIWANIS VILLAGE LODGE is looking for volunteers for the following:

    Woodworking Group Assistant

    Kiwanis Lodge is a long-term care home supporting older adults with various care needs Starting in April, they hope to introduce a simple woodworking project for the residents. They seek a volunteer to join the groups, possibly Sunday or Monday afternoons, depending on availability, to help the residents enjoy woodworking project. A volunteer for this position should have introductory woodworking skills, kindness and patience, the ability to support a resident with a task at their own pace, and should be comfortable in a group of 5 – 7 people (including volunteers/staff/residents).  This volunteer will also need the ability to bend, stand for short periods of time and take self-directed initiative to step in and help.

    Knitting Group or 1:1Volunteer

    Kiwanis Lodge hosts a knitting program for the residents once a month focusing on simple projects such as knitting squares, scarves or other small, manageable items.  They are seeking a volunteer who can provide guidance and encouragement, either one on one or in a small group setting, to help the residents enjoy the calming and creative process of knitting. No formal teaching experience is required for this position; just patience, a love of knitting and a willingness to share your skills.  Scheduling is flexible, but Kiwanis is hoping to offer the program on weekday or weekend afternoons.

    Chess Companion Volunteer – 1:1

    Kiwanis Lodge is looking for a volunteer to play chess one on one with a resident who enjoys the game. This is a wonderful opportunity to build a meaningful connection while engaging in friendly matches that keep the mind active and sharp. This volunteer does not need to be a chess master; this just requires a willingness to play, chat and enjoy the game together; scheduling is flexible. This volunteer should have the ability to play chess, be kind, patient, have confidence and have the ability to initiate one to one visits after a training period.

  • HAVEN SOCIETY – Delivery Driver/Sorter/donations pick up

    Haven Society of seeking a volunteer to pick up donations from around the community and drop them off at Haven Society. This volunteer would also help organize the basement donations if needed. The volunteer can choose to use their own vehicle, or use of Haven’s van can be arranged. This volunteer must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds at a time, and have to physical limitations or injuries that would prevent them from lifting or carrying anything up to 50 pounds. This volunteer should also have training or be aware of safe lifting practices and have a valid Class 5 drivers license and be able to provide a drivers abstract.   • WORDSTORM SOCIETY OF THE ARTS – Board Directors

    Wordstorm Society of the Arts seeks individuals interested in serving in various roles for the 2025/2026 year, including President, Secretary and Treasurer.  Wordstorm serves to emphasize a community with valuable creative initiatives. For Board Directors, a variety of skillsets are welcome including bookkeeping, grant writing, minute taking, event planning, file/data organization, and member engagement.  Orientation from current board directors will be provided.   • NANAIMO DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTRE – Reception and Permit Processing

    Nanaimo Disability Resource Centre requires volunteers to greet walk-in clients, answer phones, take messages and process Parking Permit applications. This position is for 3 hours/week from 9AM to 12:30 PM or from 12:30 to 3:30PM.  The Thursday morning and afternoon shifts are currently vacant and are preferred.  Due to the training required, a time commitment of 6 months is required. All training is provided, and there will be support staff nearby for help.  A volunteer for this position must speak English fluently, have the ability to multi-task, answer phones and have basic computer knowledge.  Office experience is preferred but is not essential.   • ELDERDOG NANAIMO-OCEANSIDE – Rehoming/Fostering Coordinator

    ElderDog provides free services to seniors who need help looking after their dogs. They are looking for a Rehoming/Fostering Coordinator to join the Nanaimo-Oceanside Team.  This position assists seniors who need their dog fostered or rehomed.  A mentoring program is designed to help a new Coordinator understand the position.  There is no specified time frame per week, as it can be very busy or quiet.  The Coordinator should have some experience with dogs, be reliable, and have a computer, printer and cell phone or digital camera.  An RCMP Criminal Record Check is required; this is not paid for by the agency.
